Local women’s health advocates to rally in support of U.S. Supreme Court ruling

Press release from Planned Parenthood:

Today, supporters of women’s health will be gathering at Aston Park to celebrate the United States Supreme Court ruling on Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, a case with significant implications for Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers (TRAP) laws and women’s access to safe and legal abortion.

WHO: 20-30 supporters of Planned Parenthood and women’s health care.

WHAT: Rally to celebrate the Supreme Court decision striking down TRAP legislation.

WHEN: June 27, 5:30pm.

WHERE: Aston Park, Hilliard Ave & S French Broad Ave.

TRAP laws are medically unnecessary restrictions designed to limit access to abortion by placing undue burdens on providers. Doctors and medical health professionals have repeatedly spoken out against such regulations. Some states with TRAP legislation have seen clinic closures, reductions of services, and women having to travel hundreds of miles—sometimes to other states—to find clinics providing abortion.

Background

This US Supreme Court case focuses on two provisions of a Texas TRAP law:
A mandate that health centers that provide abortions comply with requirements for ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs).
A requirement that doctors who provide abortions obtain admitting privileges at a local hospital.
Both provisions are medically unnecessary.
TRAP laws often involve regulations on things like hallway widths and the number of parking spaces at a facility.
Admitting privileges are very much business arrangements between doctors and hospitals and have nothing to do with patient safety.
Abortion is among the safest and most common procedures performed in the United States.
If these provisions stand, they will lead to closures of facilities or an end to abortion services at those facilities. Many providers in Texas have already been forced to close their doors and turn women away.
