In 2005 she was named Principal of Buncombe County Early College (BCEC) before going back to Owen High as Principal in 2011.

Under Turner’s leadership, BECE was awarded Junior Achievement School of the Year 2010, the BCS Compass Award and hosted Governor Perdue in 2008 and 2010.
Personally, Turner has been the gubernatorial appointee to the Professional Teaching Standards Commission since 2007, a NCNSP Community College Task Force invitee, a NCNSP Principal’s Advisory Board member and The College Board Chinese Bridge delegate in 2010. Currently, Turner is also one of only 600 selectees in the nation participating in a 2-year pilot program for the National Board Certification process for principals.

When asked about the selection Turner comments, “I am honored to be selected by my peers to represent the principals of this district as each of us strives for excellence in service to the students of Buncombe County. I learned so much from my colleagues at Early College and I continue to learn each day at Owen too. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share my experiences and the wonderful things happening in these schools across the region.”

Turner received her Bachelors in Special Education and Human Development from Vanderbilt University in 1985 and received her Masters in School Administration from Harvard University in 1989. Prior to her time at Buncombe County, she was a Special Education teacher in Atlanta (1985-86) and Nashville (1986-88) and served as Learning Resource Department Chair at Harwood Union High in Moretown, Vermont (1989-1994). After moving to Asheville in 1995 she worked as an independent Corporate/Educational Trainer, Outward Bound Instructor and Upward Bound Program Director until 2001. Turner served as the Assistant Director for Special Academic Programs at UNC-Asheville from 2000-2001 before coming to Buncombe County Schools.

Married to C.W. McMurry and mother of 7-year-old Mia, Turner enjoys spending time with her family, swimming, biking and doing almost anything outdoors.

Along with Turner the 2012-13 BCS Principal of the Year, Owen High also proudly represents the current 2013 BCS Teacher of the Year, Dawn Rookey.

Turner advances to compete with other local district winners from Western North Carolina for the regional title. The winner of the NC Wells Fargo Principal of the Year will be named in the spring.
