PRESS RELEASE:

Western North Carolina SUBWAY® sandwich shops have announced Mills River Elementary School as the grand prize winner of the 2015 SUBWAY® Fit for Life Challenge. The students tracked their healthy eating and physical activity choices for two weeks last October and third-grade teacher Erin Stachura held a RunJumpThrow event at the school and submitted their efforts for the top prize.

In a congratulatory letter to the school,  Kevin Duval, local board chair of SUBWAY® sandwich shops of Western North Carolina, encouraged the students to “keep striving for healthy habits” and thanked Mills River Elementary “for all your school community does to encourage healthy lifestyles.” Local SUBWAY® manager Tony Gerou of SUBSTAR Inc., a family of five sub shops in Hendersonville and Saluda, presented the equipment to Stachura and Coach Tim Fendley on Monday.

SUBWAY® sandwich shops joined with USA Track & Field (USATF) for the Fit for Life Challenge. As USATF’s signature community outreach program, RunJumpThrow is a high-energy, interactive half-day of activity that gets students excited about being physically active, incorporating the basic skills of track and field along with music, dancing and instruction.

USA Track & Field is the National Governing Body for track & field, long-distance running and race walking in the United States. USATF fields the national track & field team and encompasses the country’s #1 high school and junior high participatory sport and 30 million adult runners.
