ASHEVILLE, N.C. (May 21, 2012) – Mission Hospital recently introduced cutting edge stroke technology that will significantly improve the outcomes of patients suffering from a stroke. The Solitaire FR is an example of the new generation of revascularization devices intended to restore blood flow to the brain in patients suffering acute ischemic stroke. These devices are designed to mechanically remove blood clots from blocked vessels and were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in March.
Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. Ischemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is blocked by a clot. According to the American Heart Association, stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. and a leading cause of long-term disability.
