Mission Hospital introduces new stroke technology to help patients

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (May 21, 2012) – Mission Hospital recently introduced cutting edge stroke technology that will significantly improve the outcomes of patients suffering from a stroke. The Solitaire FR is an example of the new generation of revascularization devices intended to restore blood flow to the brain in patients suffering acute ischemic stroke. These devices are designed to mechanically remove blood clots from blocked vessels and were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in March.

Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. Ischemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is blocked by a clot. According to the American Heart Association, stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. and a leading cause of long-term disability.

“We are extremely pleased to be working with the physicians of Carolina Vascular to bring the Solitaire FR revascularization device to patients at Mission Hospital,” said Jonathan Bailey, Vice President of Operations. “Dr. John Short, Dr. William Marx, and Dr. Jonas Goldstein are experts in stroke and they have seen positive results with the new technology. We are right in the heart of the ‘stroke belt’ in western North Carolina. Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States but it is the third leading cause of death in North Carolina. And Western North Carolina residents are 36% more likely to die from stroke than those in other parts of the state.”

“At Mission Health our BIG(GER) Aim is to get each and every patient to the desired outcome — without harm, without waste and with an exceptional experience for both the patient and family,” said Ronald A. Paulus, MD, President and CEO of Mission Health. “As our nation struggles to control rapidly escalating healthcare costs, our team at Mission is proactively seeking new healthcare technologies and procedures to serve our region. The Solitaire FR revascularization technology is an example of the world-class, innovative care that Mission Health offers to the patients we serve.”
