Mission Hospital receives award for care provided at cancer center

From the press release from Mission Health:

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – April 30, 2012 – The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American Colleges of Surgeons (ACoS) recently announced Mission Hospital as a recipient of one of its “Outstanding Achievement Awards” for providing quality care to cancer patients. This award, which was based on an independent survey conducted in 2011, recognizes cancer programs across the country that achieve certain levels of excellence in cancer care.

The award is granted to facilities demonstrating a “Commendation” level of compliance in six areas of their cancer program: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical management, research, community outreach and quality improvement.

Mission is one of 106 currently accredited cancer programs across the country to receive the award. Click to view a complete list of award recipients.

The award continues a track record of quality improvement under Mission President and CEO Ronald A. Paulus, MD, who assumed leadership of the health system in September 2010. Most recently, Mission Hospital was named to The Community Value 100 list compiled by Cleverley & Associates, which recognizes hospitals that bring value to their community, are financially viable, and provide high quality patient care. Mission Health was also recently named by Thomson Reuters as one of the top 15 health systems in the nation. Mission Hospital was named one of the country’s Top 100 hospitals by Thomson Reuters for the fourth-straight year.

“This recognition by the Commission on Cancer shows the tremendous strides in patient care and quality we’ve made,” Mission Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer William Maples, MD said. “It’s important to continue providing the highest level of care to all our patients in western North Carolina, including our cancer patients. We are committed to raising the bar in all areas of quality improvement at Mission.”

The level of compliance associated with the CoC Outstanding Achievement Award is determined during an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor, who is unaffiliated with the hospital. Facilities must receive a positive compliance rating for 29 cancer program standards.

CoC’s Accreditation Program sets quality-of-care standards for cancer programs and reviews the programs to ensure they conform to those standards. Accreditation by the CoC is given only to those facilities that have committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process of their performance.

To maintain accreditation, facilities with the CoC-accredited cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years.
