Moffitt to chair Public Enterprise Study Committee

Here’s the press release from the office of N.C. Statehouse Rep. Tim Moffitt:

Raleigh, NC – Representative Tim Moffitt was appointed recently to chair the Public Enterprise System & Use of Funds Study Committee.

The Public Enterprise System & Use of Funds Study Committee is charged with looking at the allowable uses of government-owned corporation funds and then
making recommendations to the General Assembly to ensure transparency, proper funding and the improved management of public enterprises run by local governments. Public enterprises are business organizations owned by the state (such as airports, transportation systems and sewer or water systems) that are controlled by a public authority.

“Essentially, we have a system today where the fox is guarding the henhouse,” commented Rep. Moffitt. “Given the potential for the abuse and misuse of such a system, it’s only prudent that we study this issue and ensure best practices are in place to protect both the ratepayers and the taxpayers.”

The committee’s recommendations will be reported in the 2014 short session and the 2015 long session as a component of the Legislative Research Commission’s report. “As stewards of the taxpayer’s money, it’s incumbent upon us to make sure every dollar is spent effectively and efficiently, including those going to public enterprise systems,” said Speaker of the House Thom Tillis. “I can think of no better champion for the protection of taxpayers than Representative Tim Moffitt.” Representative Moffitt is currently serving his second term in the North Carolina General Assembly. In addition to chairing the Public Enterprise System & Use of Funds Study Committee, Rep. Moffitt also chairs the House Committee on Regulatory Reform, the Joint Legislative Administrative Procedures Oversight Committee, and the Property Owner Protection and Rights Study Committee.

Rep. Moffitt additionally serves on ten other committees, including: the House Committee on Commerce and Job Development (Vice-Chairman); the House State Personnel Committee (Vice Chairman); Finance; Government; Rules, Calendar, and Operations of the House; Transportation; the Joint Legislative Program Evaluation Oversight Committee; the Revenue Laws Study Committee, the Joint Legislative Economic Development and Global Engagement Oversight Committee, and the Joint Legislative Committee on Local Government. Representative Moffitt also serves as Chairman of the North Carolina Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus.

What, no Chairmanship of the Privatization committee this term? Oh. It hasn’t been assigned yet.

Speaking of “Public Enterprise”, DENR Asst. Director Mitch “Frack, Baby, Frack” Gillespie said yesterday in the Environmental Review Commission, that they now think that there may be gas shale deposits out here in WNC, and they are coming out for some exploring.

Just FYI, if you see rigs popping up, that’s probably why…

    Wow, I just caught this:

“Public enterprises are business organizations owned by the state (such as airports, transportation systems and sewer or water systems) that are controlled by a public authority.”

The spin isn’t that the ratepayers own the water system anymore: It’s The State. Rep. Moffitt is now openly saying that The State owns the water, sewer, airports, transit systems, etc. that everyone else believes are owned by the municipalities that built & operate them.

    Go, GovCo! eh conservatives?
