For a unique opportunity to purchase plants and learn from experts about how to these plants grow and thrive in our mountain cove environment, the Montreat LandCare Committee is sponsoring its 3rd Annual Native Plant Sale and First Annual Arbor Day Celebration this Saturday, May 2, 2015, 10:00 am until 2:00 pm, rain or shine.
On hand at the Moore Center Field and Meeting Room in the town of Montreat, will be local garden and landscape vendors as well as experts and master gardeners with workshops and demonstrations. Master of science students in Montreat College’s Environmental Education Program will lead local walking tours of local plants and landscapes and of Montreat’s new wildflower garden.
Vendors will include Appalachian Creek Nursery & Landscape, MellieMac’s Garden Shack, Ten Thousand Villages, and April Carder In-Site Out Designs. Experts will include Master Gardeners, the American Chestnut Foundation, the NC Forest Service and knowledgeable citizen-volunteers who will present workshops and demonstrations concerning native and invasive plants, hemlock protection, aging tree populations and successful growth of disease-resistant chestnuts.

Joined in the LandCare effort are Montreat Conference Center, the Town of Montreat, Montreat College’s Environmental Education and Outdoor Education Departments, the MRA Wilderness Committee, Montreat Trail Club, Montreat Wildlife Habitat Program, Montreat Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) the Earth Ministry Team, Cottagers’ Wilderness Camp; and the Open Space Program.
