Mountain Housing Opportunities Recognized for Saving Homes and Lives

On November 18, 2016, Mountain Housing Opportunities (MHO) was recognized for 25 years of partnership with the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency (NCHFA) at a plaque ceremony in Weaverville. To date, this partnership has brought an investment of more than $1 million from NCHFA’s home repair and rehabilitation programs through MHO. In those 25 years, MHO helped more than 3,700 families to stay in their homes with safety-related home repairs.

The plaque ceremony took place at the home of Ms. Marjorie Brock, where MHO used NCHFA Urgent Home Repair funds to replace floors and plumbing in her kitchen and bathroom, allowing her to remain in her home and avoid costly institutionalization. Ms. Brock is 77 years old and lives on Social Security income. The Emergency Home Repair program provides 130 safety-related home repairs each year to more than 100 low income homeowners who are elderly, disabled, or families with children.

“MHO is honored and happy to receive this recognition from NCHFA for our 25-year partnership,” said MHO executive director Scott Dedman. “NCHFA has saved over 500 Buncombe County homes and many homeowners’ lives through their support of MHO’s Emergency Home Repairs. We appreciate Ms. Brock for welcoming us into her home to celebrate this partnership, and we thank North Carolina Senator Terry Van Duyn and NCHFA Board member Bill Oglesby for joining us to show their strong support.”

Mountain Housing Opportunities, founded in 1988, is a private, nonprofit community development corporation whose mission is to build and improve homes, neighborhoods, communities and lives and to build hope and dignity in the people they serve. In its 28-year history, MHO has served more than 6,000 households through affordable housing development, lending and repair.
