The N.C. Department of Transportation is accepting proposals from communities for the 2013 Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grant Initiative . The program provides funding for municipalities across the state to develop comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian plans.
The deadline for application submittal is Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 5 p.m. Planning grant recipients will be notified in June 2013.
“Having a bicycle or pedestrian plan in place helps communities lay the groundwork for future projects that enhance biking and walking options, which in turn can have positive impacts on the health, safety and economy of the local population,” said Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Director Lauren Blackburn.
The planning grant program is sponsored by NCDOT’s Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation and the Transportation Planning Branch. More than $3.6 million has been awarded to 134 municipalities across the state since the program began in 2004.
Proposals are divided and judged in geographical groups to ensure equal distribution of funding across the state. The selection incorporates a diverse mix of municipalities from large cities to small towns.
These plans are not for one specific project, but represent a comprehensive strategy for expanding bicycle and pedestrian opportunities within a given municipality. They address facilities, programs, services and regulations that encourage safe walking and bicycling.
