Nominate a Downtown (Asheville) Hero for 2012 awards

The Asheville Downtown Association is seeking nominations for its 2012 Downtown Heroes Awards. Downtown Heroes are individuals who have made a significant impact on downtown Asheville, have been active in its revitalization, and have contributed time and energy to improve the downtown area for businesses, residents and tourists.

A nomination form is available at ashevilledowntown.org. Nominations may also be submitted to meghan@ashevilledowntown.org and should include the name of the individual nominated, contact information for that person and a description of their accomplishments as they relate to downtown. Nominations will be accepted until Friday, June 29, 2012.

Nominations will be evaluated by a panel of judges including the current ADA board president, the immediate past president and other former board presidents and members. Previous recipients of the Downtown Heroes Award are Leslie Anderson, Bob Carr/Tops for Shoes and Public Interest Projects.

The ADA also celebrates its 25th year serving the downtown community in 2012. Founded in 1987 by a group of business owners, residents and city staff, the ADA remains committed to the preservation and improvement of the central business district through programming, civic support and annual objectives. As the voice of downtown residents, merchants and workers, the ADA advocates for policies and practices that will best help growth and preserve the quality of life in downtown. Annually, the organization produces events including Downtown After 5, the Asheville Holiday Parade, Oktoberfest, the State of Downtown Luncheon and the Pritchard Park Cultural Arts Program. The Asheville Downtown Association Foundation carries out the altruistic goals of the ADA including the Spare Change for Real Change program.

The selected individuals will be announced at the 2012 Downtown Heroes Awards Celebration and 25th Anniversary Gala on Saturday, August 11 from 6-10pm in the Banquet Hall of the U.S. Cellular Civic Center (formerly the Asheville Civic Center). Tickets for members are $25 or $175 for a table of eight. Potential members are $35 or $250 for a table of eight. Tickets will be available at ashevilledowntown.org beginning Monday, June 25.
