Oakley Farmers Market opens for its first season with ribbon cutting ceremony

(Asheville, N.C.) –The new Oakley Farmers Market kicked off its first season on Thursday, May 31, 2012 with a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony. Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy participated in the festivities and spoke to the crowd about the importance of supporting Asheville-area farmers and helping the local economy by shopping for locally-produced food and craft items at neighborhood markets.

Other highlights of the celebration included a tractor display, musical entertainment and a children’s planting activity provided by Oakley’s own Gladheart Farm. Oakley Farmers Market will continue to feature displays, live music, demonstrations and children’s activities each market day throughout the season.
Offerings from the market’s produce vendors in the coming weeks will include sugar snap peas, broccoli, beets, radishes, kale, lettuce, cabbage, turnips, spinach and much more. In addition to produce, shoppers will find locally-produced cheese, meat, pottery, granola, jams, rugs, plant starts, baked goods, handspun yarn and roasted nuts. The Chocolate Lab has signed on as a day vendor at the market, offering a selection of hand-dipped chocolates. Also, Vandele Farms be grilling some of their delicious meat products during market days.

At upcoming markets, vendors and others from the community will offer demonstrations including how to use a knitting machine, how to make homemade sauerkraut and kimchee and more.
The Oakley Farmers Market is open 2-6 p.m. Thursdays through Oct. 25 in the parking lot next to the Oakley Community Garden behind Oakley United Methodist Church, 607 Fairview Road, Asheville. The market offers fresh, locally-produced vegetables, fruit, meat, eggs and dairy products along with handmade food and craft items produced by local artisans.
