Pisgah Legal offers free health care navigation help

From a United Way press release:

Pisgah Legal offers free health care navigation help

Pisgah Legal Services (PLS), a United Way of Transylvania County (UWTC) partner agency, is a federally funded Affordable Care Act (ACA) Health Care Navigator Organization. PLS seeks to help individuals and families understand their affordable health insurance options. PLS can help provide the facts and answer questions about the Affordable Care Act.

ACA Open Enrollment began November 15, 2014. It ends on February 15, 2015. For a FREE, in-person appointment for enrollment assistance, call 855-733-3711.

Quick facts about ACA Enrollment:
·         Financial help is available to cover the cost of health insurance
·         9 out of 10 people in NC qualified for financial help
·         Individuals can’t be denied health insurance for pre-existing conditions (diabetes, heart disease, etc.)
·         Preventive Care is FREE (physical exams, regular screenings, etc.)
·         Young Adults can stay on a parent’s plan until age 26
·         Options are available based on health needs and household income level
·         Timely Enrollment avoids tax penalties.

Go online for free electronic help understanding options at the Get Covered America website: https://www.getcoveredamerica.org/connector. Enter a zip code to make an appointment with a local navigator. Another ACA resource for residents of North Carolina is the NC Get Covered website (www.ncgetcovered.org).

Many people qualify to enroll outside of open enrollment. This is called a “Special Enrollment Period.” Married? Lost a job and health insurance? Moved to a new area? These are just a few examples — there are many more. Call PLS for more information about qualifying to enroll outside of open enrollment.

Medicaid and NC Health Choice accept applications year round. Apply at a local Department of Health and Human Services (DSS) or www.epass.nc.gov.

PLS also provides free outreach and education on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and NC Health Insurance Marketplace. To host an outreach event or have a PLS Health Care Navigator come speak to an agency or organization, call 828.253.0406 or go to www.pisgahlegal.org.

UWTC has three goals for achieving positive community outcomes: increasing residents’ financial stability, raising the county’s high school graduation rate and improving health care access and healthy behaviors.

At the present time, UWTC funds programs that strengthen families by helping prevent teen pregnancy, homelessness and neglect; and by providing housing, adult day care, family counseling, after-school programs, health care access, free transportation, youth athletic programs, financial counseling and youth conflict resolution training.
