Poet & activist Nikki Giovanni presents at Warren Wilson College May 7

Acclaimed American poet Nikki Giovanni will be presenting at Warren Wilson College as the final speaker of the college’s Spotlight Series this year on May 7.

Giovanni, who is originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, is the author of three New York Times bestsellers, in addition to being a seven-time winner of the NAACP Image Award, a Grammy nominee, and finalist for the National Book Award. Giovanni currently serves as a faculty member at Virginia Tech, and released her most recent book, “Chasing Utopia: A Hybrid” in 2013.

Known for blending scenes from her past with explorations of the topics of race, gender, and inequality in American culture, Giovanni will be presenting a lecture titled “Diversity as Art: Art is Diversity,” as part of the overall theme of WWC’s Spotlight Series for this academic year, which centers around “Social and Intellectual Movements.”

The event will be held at Warren Wilson’s Kittredge Theater at 7pm, and is free for the public to attend. Interested parties are encouraged to contact Student Activities Director Dan Seeger at 828-771-3748 for more information on the event.

Giovanni presents “Diversity as Art: Art is Diversity” at WWC

Warren Wilson College’s Spotlight Series for the 2014-15 academic year concludes May 7 with a presentation by poet Nikki Giovanni titled, “Diversity as Art: Art is Diversity.” The event, free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. in Kittredge Theater, at the north entrance to campus.

In addition to her renown as a poet, Giovanni is widely known as an educator, orator and civil rights advocate. A University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech, where she has been a faculty member since 1987, Giovanni has written three New York Times and Los Angeles Times best sellers. Her most recent book, published in 2013, is “Chasing Utopia: A Hybrid.”

Born in Knoxville, Tenn., Giovanni grew up in Cincinnati and graduated with honors in history from Fisk University. She has been awarded, among many distinctions, an unprecedented seven NAACP Image Awards. Giovanni also has been nominated for a Grammy Award and has been a finalist for the National Book Award.

The Giovanni presentation is part of Warren Wilson’s Spotlight Series of nationally and internationally known speakers. The series theme for the current academic year is “Social and Intellectual Movements.”
