RALEIGH – People are invited to Brevard on Thursday, Dec. 1 for a public hearing the state is hosting on a plan to clean up the site where the DuPont Corporation used to make film and silicon.
During the hearing, the N.C. Division of Waste Management will accept public comments on DuPont’s proposed plan, which outlines the cleanup of contamination at the site in DuPont State Recreational Forest.
By law, the property must be cleaned up so it does not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment. DuPont’s operations making high purity silicon and X-ray films for more than four decades resulted in soil and groundwater contamination at the site. DuPont is responsible for assessing and cleaning up contamination from its past operations.
The state Division of Waste Management has been overseeing the remediation activities, which has included the demolition and removal of the former plant and the removal of X-ray film waste.
DuPont in May drafted a plan to conduct additional cleanup activities, and presented its plan to the public for feedback. Changes were made to the plan based on that feedback and, as required by law, the state agency earlier this fall submitted the final draft for an additional public comment period. People unable to participate in the public hearing have until Monday, Dec. 5 to provide the state with comments on the final draft.
