Rainbow Recycling hosts collection day Saturday, Nov. 10, for all your hard-to-recycle items

Press release

From Rainbow Recycling

Rainbow Recycling is collaborating with Curbside Management, Asheville GreenWorks, E-cycleUs and Trash, Inc. Creative Reuse Center to sponsor a special recycling collection on Saturday, Nov. 10, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kmart, 1830 Hendersonville Road in Asheville. This is the largest collection yet with 15 categories of hard-to-recycle items — those not accepted in your regular curbside recycling along with a few other select items. Some articles will be given or made available to those who can reuse them, such as packaging, flower pots, warm clothing and blankets, medical equipment, pet items and eyeglasses.

This event is an opportunity to responsibly dispose of that abundant and troublesome material –Styrofoam. Leading Green Distributing and Rainbow Recycling will happily take it along with other packaging material (bubble wrap, air pillows, foam sheeting, paper) for reuse or recycling. All packaging items must be sorted and bagged, free of tape, glue and grease. NOT taken – Styrofoam food service containers or upholstery, insulation or colored foam.

Need to get rid of those bulky plastic objects such as lawn furniture, yard toys, buckets and garbage cans? Curbside Management will be on site to assist with these items. Flower pots will be available to local growers and gardeners for reuse. Curbside will also collect hard and paperback books, phone books and cardboard.

E-CycleUs will accept electronics — computers and related equipment and accessories, audio/video equipment and all batteries. There is a $6 handling fee for televisions (tabletop, 32” or less) and CRT monitors.

Rainbow Recycling will collect small appliances for recycling. Trash, Inc. will take other metals and wire for reuse or recycling as well as plastic gift cards and old credit cards for artist reuse.

Both usable warm clothing and blankets and unusable clothing and fabric will be taken by ABCCM (Asheville-Buncombe Community Christian Ministry). The latter will be channeled to their recycling fundraiser. The Animal Compassion Network will accept towels, small stuffed animals (non-pellet), baby teething rings, cat/dog toys, metal bowls, leashes and all metal crates. Useful in their work and also accepted at this event are beef and chicken bouillon, rakes, brooms, mops, buckets, watering cans and bungee cords.

Prescription eyeglasses (in any condition) and hearing aids will be given to Valley Springs Lions Club. Used cooking oil will be accepted by The Cooking Oil Recycling Program for conversion to biodiesel fuel by Blue Ridge Biofuels.

An exciting addition to this event is the collection of chip and snack bags (any size or type of bag; any kind of snack chip, cracker, etc.) as well as personal care and beauty item containers. This last category is limited to toothpaste tubes/pumps of any type or size, hand lotion, hair gel and other soft plastic tubes, lipstick, mascara and other hard plastic tubes and powder, eye shadow and other plastic cosmetic cases.

Please note that this event runs for just four hours — 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. No early or late drop-offs; accepting listed items ONLY. The convenient drive-thru will be staffed by volunteers and have a layout designed to accommodate recyclers as quickly as possible. With the anticipated volume of participants as well as the expanded list of items taken, residents are encouraged to greet their fellow recyclers and event staff with neighborly spirit and patience.

For general questions, contact Rainbow Recycling, (828) 669-5459, info@rainbowrecycling.org, before Nov. 10. If you have specific questions about accepted items, please contact the appropriate vendor (see flyer posted on www.ashevillegreenworks.org) or request by email from Rainbow Recycling. More volunteers are needed; if you would like to help at this event (two hour shift for set-up, collection, or closing), contact Gail at 298-0538.

This is award-winning event (Carolina Recycling Association, March 2012) rotates quarterly in Buncombe County. It will be hosted in all areas in the upcoming year – North, East, South and West – with a collection also planned for Central Asheville. The first event is set for January 12 (snow date, January 19) for the West Buncombe area.

Recycling and reuse are important ways to make our communities cleaner and healthier and our economy stronger. Generating less waste is even more crucial. Please carefully consider your purchase and disposal choices so that our children and grandchildren will have the resources and wholesome environment they need for their lives.
