RiverLink hosts children’s Earth Day festival, summer camp

On April 25, RiverLink will celebrate Earth Week with a children’s festival filled with food, games and giveaways at the RiverLink Performance Park, 144 Riverside Drive. Starting at 11 a.m and ending at 3 p.m., RiverLink will have available a blow-up bounce house, face painting, crafts, educational lessons, games and more — and they’ll also be collecting used electronics for recycling.

There will be parking available at the event (for which RiverLink needs volunteers!), but attendees are encouraged to use creative, “green” transportation options — walk, bike or even float down the French Broad to the event!

For more kids’ activities as the days grow warmer, RiverLink will be hosting a summer camp for kids going into third through eighth grade, focusing on environmental education and river recreation.

“We will meet each morning and afternoon for drop-off and pick-up at the French Broad River Park at the intersection of Riverview Drive and Amboy Road in Asheville,” reads the camp information on RiverLink.org. “See registration form for map of the park. The park includes a covered pavilion, picnic tables, restrooms, water fountain, parking and walking paths.”

Kids participating in the camp will have the “opportunity to explore our local watershed, … adventure through creeks in Pisgah, visit our reservoir to find out where drinking water comes from, raft down the French Broad and learn important natural history of this region.”

The camp costs $250 per child. Sessions for third through fifth graders run June 15-19, July 13-17, July 20-July 24. One session is available for sixth through eighth graders and runs June 22-26. All camps run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Click here for registration form.
