Sculpture artist Ledelle Moe speaks at UNC Asheville on Jan. 23

Award winning large-scale sculpture artist Ledelle Moe will give a talk, “Traces,” at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23 in UNC Asheville’s Humanities Lecture Hall. She will show images of her work and describe her art-making practices and extensive international travels.

While on campus, Moe will also visit sculpture classes and critique the work of UNC Asheville students. She has taught at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Corcoran College of Art in Washington, D.C., Virginia Commonwealth University and St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

Born in Durban, South Africa, Moe has exhibited in a number of venues around the world, including the Kulturhuset in Stockholm, Sweden, the National Society of the Arts Gallery in Durban, South Africa, the International Sculpture Center and The Washington Project for the Arts in Washington, D.C., and Maryland Art Place in Baltimore. Moe was one of the founding members of the FLAT Gallery, an artist initiative and alternative space in Durban, and her roots as a South African artist remain central to her perspective and her work.

In 2002 Moe received a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant, and in 2008 she received the Kreeger Museum Artist Award. Recent projects include large-scale concrete installations at Socrates Sculpture Park and Pratt Institute in New York City, and installations in Salzburg, Austria.
