The numbers vary, depending on which reports and studies you look at, but, drawing on Census Bureau estimates, U.S. News reports today that on average, “women make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes.” North Carolina Sen. Kay Hagan comments on Equal Pay Day and what’s being done.
Press release
from Sen. Kay Hagan’s office
“Fifty years ago Congress passed the Equal Pay Act making equal pay for equal work the rule of law. As we commemorate this landmark piece of legislation, it is important to remember that our work is not done. Women across America face wage discrimination, and in North Carolina women make 81 cents for every dollar their male counterparts earn. In today’s tough economic landscape, equal pay is about more than just principle; it is about ensuring an economically sound future for all of our families.
“When I came to the Senate, the first bill I cosponsored was the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which guarantees that workers who have been discriminated against have the right to hold those responsible accountable. Cosponsoring this bill remains one of the proudest moments of my time in Washington. Though we have come a long way in the last fifty years, we cannot rest until we accomplish our goal of guaranteeing that all Americans receive fair compensation for the work they do regardless of their gender, race or religion.”
Women tend to gravitate toward lower paying jobs, plain and simple…think teachers, SOCIAL WORKERS,
(not nurses!)…
