Smile Train benefit for children with cleft palate at The White Horse, Nov. 16

Sunday, November 16, 6 p.m.- “The Smile Train” benefit for children with cleft palate. Music by Shane Pruitt Band, Red Dirt Revelators, Citizen Mojo.

White Horse Black Mountain. $15 donation

Every year over 170,000 children worldwide are born with cleft lip and/or cleft palate. Many come from families who can’t afford corrective surgery, which is why Smile Train exists. It’s an international charity that provides free cleft repair surgeries for those in need and helps train local doctors to perform the procedure. Over one million children have received life-changing care from Smile Train, allowing them to eat, breathe and speak normally. Several local favorites will play at the White Horse Black Mountain at 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 16 to raise funds for the organization.

Steeped in blues, gospel and Southern rock, Spartanburg’s Shane Pruitt Band put their own stamp on regional tradition. Guitarist Pruitt has put critics and audiences on notice that he’s a major talent to be reckoned with, a respecter of tradition who can also take improvisational flight into new territory. Hammond B3 player and vocalist Lil’ Jimmy Peterman is a founding member of the Steve Miller Blues Band, and drummer Bill Fletcher is a backline veteran or the club circuit.

Hickory’s Red Dirt Revelators are a self-described “dirty blues band”, in the sense that their music carries gritty truth. There are echoes of Howlin’ Wolf in Willie Shane Johnston’s vocals, and his harmonica work conjures up Chicago greats like Little Walter. John Fenwick provides incendiary guitar work, and the rhythm is powered by Jason Gardner on drums and Clay Ford on bass.

Citizen Mojo are a group of five seasoned pros that can keep any party jumping with their covers of danceable blues, funk, soul and rock’n’roll along with original songs. Guitarist/vocalist Stephen Blanton has thirty years’ experience in music performance, and has spent twenty-he years as host of WNCW 88.7’s Saturday Night House Party. He’ll be joined onstage by fellow Citizens Tim Clement on bass, guitarist Rob Fender, keyboardist Brad Curtioff and Tim Blackwell on drums.

Donations to Smile Train can also be made online.
