Sunday jazz showcase at Isis

From a press release:

Sunday jazz showcase at Isis

Summer is now upon us! That means a hot new lineup of jazz for those longer Sunday nights.  We would like to extend our warmest gratitude to those musicians, fans and jazz supporters who have done their part to make the ISIS one of the hottest jazz venues in WNC.

Our exciting plans for 2014 are underway, including introducing new “themed” Sunday jazz each month as well as documenting this wonderful time for jazz in Asheville on CD and video. We hope you will continue to help us spread the word, invite friends, eat, drink and be merry. Asheville’s Golden Era of jazz is well at hand… let’s all enjoy the ride!

Aug. 3

This weekend we put the guitar in spotlight, with Asheville faves Chris Morgan and Jonathan Pearlman taking the stage for an historic tribute to the giants of jazz guitar downstairs.

Upstairs we are proud to showcase several rising stars on Asheville’s jazz scene, all veterans of UNCA’s Scholarship Jazz Quintet: Michael Flanagan, Ben Colvin and John Deleon.

Be sure to make your dinner reservations early! Tables are available for shows upstairs (6-8pm) and downstairs (8-11pm). Cover for both shows is $8 / $4 for students and for musicians who have played the Sunday Jazz Showcase.

Chris Morgan with Jonathan Pearlman
Modern Guitar Showcase

MAIN STAGE, 8-11 pm

Chris Morgan (guitar); Jonathan Pearlman (guitar)
Dr. William Bares (piano); Zack Page (bass); Justin Watt (drums)

Tonight two area favorites—Chris Morgan and Jonathan Pearlman—celebrate the jazz guitar and the artists that have impacted the genre. Showcasing the music of Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Kurt Rosenwinkel and others, the duo will be joined by Dr. William Bares on piano, Zack Page on bass, and Justin Watt on drums. For this show they have compiled a diverse set containing familiar standards and rarely heard gems. Because of the rich history of jazz it is uncommon to hear music that was first released on CD and not LP. This night will feature both, including music spanning from the 1940’s to the 21st century. Expect to hear tunes that swing, tunes that rock, a little bit of funk and beautiful melodies. If you are a fan of the jazz guitar this is the show not to miss!

Local Showcase: Tacoma Quartet

UPSTAIRS LOUNGE, 6-8 pm

Ben Colvin (Sax); Michael Flanagan (Guitar)
John Deleon (Drums); Zack Page (Bass)

Ranging from be-bop to post-bop and everywhere in between, the Tacoma Quartet sets a battleground for the ardent dueling between saxophonist Ben Colvin and guitarist Michael Flanagan. After playing together throughout various contexts during their UNCA tenures, the two have moved on to further extra-curricular pursuits, pushing their unique voices further. Augmented by the inexhaustible ears of drummer John Deleon and the invincible fingers of bassist Zack Page, the Tacoma Quartet is primed for perfection. Expect tunes from Wayne Shorter, Randy Weston, John Coltrane, and more.
