Take a walk on the llama side

Llamas sometimes get a bad rap (especially as temperamental spitters) but the Southern States Llama Association hopes to correct this impression at the Walk-A-Llama Day this Sunday, March 22, from 1pm to 3pm at the Mountain Lodge and Conference Center (42 McMurray Rd.) in Flat Rock. This free event will not only feature llama walking, llama obstacle courses and llama Q&A but attendees can meet the llama stars of the upcoming film, The Llama Nation: The Documentary.

Southern States Llama Association will be sponsoring a Walk-A-Llama Day for the community this Sunday, March 22, from 1pm to 3pm at the Mountain Lodge and Conference Center in Flat Rock, NC. This is open to the public, and it’s FREE. There will be packing and carting llamas, obstacles similar to those seen at a llama show, and just a lot of fun and answers for everyone interested in llamas! “Many people have the wrong idea about llamas,” said Tom Hudgin, President of SSLA. “Walk-a-Llama Day will provide an opportunity to give the public hands-on experience to learn that llamas do not just randomly spit. They actually do make a wonderful animal to be with.” Llamas today are commonly used not only for packing and fiber, but also in Animal Assisted Therapy work. Several of the llamas that will be present at Walk-a-Llama Day are special “Llama Stars” from the upcoming film, The Llama Nation: The Documentary. Llama Nation Film Company based in Utah, spent a year traveling across the States capturing the subculture of llama owners in the United States including the story of two young 16 year olds, Janessa Hall from Dobson, NC and Hunter Snow from Athens, GA. The film crew followed Miss Hall and Miss Snow throughout the year competing for the highest award, the Alpaca Llama Show Assoc. Youth Versatility Grand Champion Award at their final competition at 2014 Grand National Show of Champions in Park City, Kansas. These two competed against each other in 10 shows in 7 different states as far away as Illinois, Iowa, and Kansas. Film director Tanner Shinnick and members of the film crew will be providing a private showing of this fantastic film Saturday night revealing who brought home the 2014 Youth Versatility Grand Champion Award during the SSLA Conference and Awards Banquet Saturday evening.
