“Telling Our Tales” student writing competition

PRESS RELEASE:

In anticipation of Thomas Wolfe’s 115th birthday celebration in October, Thomas Wolfe Memorial is inviting students and teachers to participate in the 2016 “Telling Our Tales” Student Writing Competition. Thomas Wolfe, while best known for his novels, also wrote many short stories for magazines. In this competition, students will submit their own work of fiction inspired by Thomas Wolfe and his story “The Far and the Near.” The story first appeared July 1935 in Cosmopolitan Magazine. In this rich tale a railroad engineer passes a small cottage every day, waving to the women who live there. Upon his retirement, he goes to visit the cottage and is forced to confront the reality behind his vision.

First, second, and third place winners will be chosen from three age groups: Grades 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Submissions may be hand delivered, postmarked or emailed by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday September 24, 2016. Winners will be invited to present their stories and accept their awards at a program at the Thomas Wolfe Memorial’s visitor center at 11am on Saturday, October 22nd, 2016. Cash Awards are given in each age group.
