The Healing Place invites community to first Celebration of Courage

Press release

From The Healing Place

The Healing Place is continually seeking community awareness and support in its efforts to combat incidents of rape, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse occurring within our midst. While the Department of Justice data suggest a decline in sexual assaults, more and more people are seeking our services. The statistics are sobering: in just the last year alone, locally more than 900 men, women, and children received support, advocacy, and specialized mental health treatment, at no cost for as long as needed, to overcome the violence perpetrated against them. The victims of these assaults are not just numbers, they are your neighbors, your friends, your co-workers and, in some cases, possibly members of your own family. A strong COMMUNITY and PROFESSIONAL alliance, working together, ensures their voices are heard whenever and wherever possible. The Healing Place is excited and honored to announce an upcoming event which will enthusiastically jump-start that alliance in 2013 and beyond.

THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 2013, Henderson County residents and professionals are invited to attend the first annual CELEBRATION OF COURAGE luncheon where you will be introduced to our featured speaker, Ms. Olga Trujillo, abuse survivor, attorney and author of The Sum of My Parts, copies of which are available at the main library and for sale on Amazon.com. This is the electrifying story of Olga’s traumatic childhood of sexual, emotional and physical abuse and the amazing courage it took for her to emerge from that tunnel of terror to become the accomplished and healed individual whose voice, once heard, you will never forget.

Ms. Trujillo’s appearance as our keynote speaker is the result of the work of dedicated committee members, headed by Ms. Lavinia Zimmermann, who were charged with the task of developing an annual community event which would keep the mission of The Healing Place foremost in our minds…”to provide specialized treatment to help men, women, and children recover from sexual violence.”

Please mark your calendars well in advance for this important, informative and inspirational event which shows the amazing resiliency of the human mind, body and spirit when the voices of abuse victims are heard, and acted upon, by a responsive and caring community.
