UNC Asheville to host Regional Science Olympiad

UNC Asheville to host Regional Science Olympiad

Young scientists from 33 middle and high schools in Western North Carolina will compete in the Regional Science Olympiad on Saturday, Feb. 28, at UNC Asheville. These teams will be competing in 46 events; highlights of the tournament include the elastic launch glider competition and the duct tape challenge. Events will take place from 9:00 a.m.-2:45 p.m. in various locations across UNC Asheville’s campus.

Helping and interacting with these future scientists will be many volunteers from UNC Asheville, as well as individuals from Sud Associates Consulting Engineers, Western Piedmont Community College, NC BioNetwork, Snap-On Tools, North Carolina State University Engineering, Catawba Valley Community College, National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Buncombe County Early College.

Competing schools are A.C. Reynolds Middle and High Schools, Avery Middle School, Bethel Middle School, Clyde A. Erwin Middle School, East McDowell Middle School, Evergreen Community Charter School, Fairview School, Flat Rock Middle School, Nantahala School, Owen Middle School, Polk County Middle and High Schools, Ranger Middle School, Rugby Middle School, The Mountain Community School, Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy, Waynesville Middle School, Asheville High School, Carolina Day School, Charles D. Owen High, Cherokee High School, East Henderson High School, Henderson County Early College, Hiwassee Dam High School, McDowell High School, North Buncombe High School, Polk County Early College, Robbinsville High School, Smoky Mountain High School, T.C. Roberson High School, Tuscola High School and West Henderson High School.

The winners of the regional tournament will move on to the statewide tournament later this year.
