UNC Asheville’s Drama Department presents Wiley and the Hairy Man, Nov. 19-22

Press release:

UNC Asheville’s Drama Department will present Wiley and the Hairy Man, a family play suitable for adults, children and school group field trips, with four public performances, opening November 19 in UNC Asheville’s Carol Belk Theatre.

Wiley and the Hairy Man, adapted from a traditional Southern folktale by renowned playwright Suzan Zeder, centers around a young boy, his mother who is a conjurer, his faithful dog and the sinister Hairy Man who haunts the nearby swamp. In an exciting duel of wits, Wiley learns to rely upon his own resources to overcome his fears and conquer the Hairy Man.

The Drama Department also is staging special daytime performances for area school groups on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 19-20 at 10:30 a.m. The play is appropriate for grades K-8, and is entertaining for all age groups. School group tickets are available now; for more information, contact Suzie Morris at 828.251.6610.

The Hairy Man features costumes constructed from recyclable trash, lending an environmental theme to the play, according to Nathan Singer, student director of the production. “With a show intended for young audiences, and with schools bringing their classes here, I feel that we should take this opportunity to show something of importance to future generations,” said Singer. “I realize that our production will not be able to tackle issues as difficult as toxicity, but a little reminder about casual littering seems to be a good place to start.”

The cast will include UNC Asheville students Justin Day, Morgan Fuller, Julian González, Nicholas Lanier, Bryan Marks, Ryan Miller, Dylan Murray, Stacie Stewart and Michelle Troszak.

Curtain time for the public performances is 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, November 19-21, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Nov. 22. Tickets are $12; $10 for seniors, $7 for students, and are available at drama.unca.edu/theatreunca-mainstage-season. For more information, call 828.251.6610.
