CANDLER, N.C. – September 22, 2014 – Nancy Waldrop, candidate for County Commissioner in District 3, today announced she has been endorsed by the Buncombe County Association of Educators (BCAE).

“As a 30 year veteran educator, it is clear that Nancy Waldrop believes that the key to strong community is strong public schools,” the organization said in a statement. “BCAE takes great pride in recommending her as the District 3 candidate for Buncombe County Commission.”

Waldrop, a western North Carolina native with a Master’s Degree in Education from Western Carolina University, taught in Buncombe County schools for 29 years.

“I’m honored to have this stamp of approval from the teachers of Buncombe County,” Waldrop said. “They know, as I do, the important role a quality education and good schools play in the life of this county and the importance of support from the County Commission to fund that role.”

The Buncombe County Commission is responsible for funding school building projects and also currently provides funds beyond the minimum required by the state for teachers’ assistants, additional teachers to keep class sizes down and additional pay to retain quality teachers.

Though retired from teaching, Waldrop has remained active in education and served as a member of the planning committee that helped establish the Martin L. Jr. Discovery Academy, a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) school, dedicated on Sunday, September 21 in Buncombe County.

“Nancy was an important member of the planning team for Discovery Academy,” said Susanne Swanger, Associate Superintendent
of Curriculum and Instruction for Buncombe County Schools. “With her experience in education and knowledge of the community, she understood the economic forecast and helped us plan a timeline that worked.”
