Weekly YMCA indoor market features goods from 40 regional vendors

Press release from the YMCA of Western North Carolina:

Asheville, N.C., Jan. 7, 2016 – The first YMCA Winter Market of the season will be held Saturday, January 9, from 10am to 12:30pm, at Grace Covenant Church, 789 Merrimon Avenue in North Asheville. Forty vendors from throughout the region will be selling an array of vegetables, fruits, meats, cheeses, breads, and specialty products. The market will run weekly through Saturday, March 26.

The YMCA Winter Market started in 2012 as a way to help local farmers and vendors maintain their income during the winter and give consumers reliable access to fresh, local food when outdoor markets have closed for the season. Grace Covenant Church donates space for the vendors, and the vendor fees benefit the YMCA of Western North Carolina’s Nutrition Programs, which serve those in need of food assistance by providing free, healthy food and nutrition education.

“This is our third year participating at the YMCA Winter Market, and we’re glad we’ve been able to provide people with fresh, local produce while supporting the YMCA’s Nutrition Programs,” said Claudine Cremer, co-owner of Meadow Cove Farm in Weaverville.

“What started from a casual conversation with a local farmer about the challenges farmers face during the winter has grown into a thriving market. We encourage everyone to come see what great local goods are available during these winter months,” said Lisa Riggsbee, Healthy Living Manager, Nutrition Programs at the YMCA of Western North Carolina.
