WNC EcoFest to feature “green” fun for all

Here’s the press release from the Haywood Chamber of Commerce:

Waynesville, NC. The Haywood Chamber of Commerce’s newest festival, WNC EcoFest is designed to inspire you, to teach you and to entertain you in all things “green”. Enjoy a day filled with everything from homemade soap making to square foot gardening to canning and preservation, May 4, 10 am – 4pm on the beautiful campus of Haywood Community College.

In addition to vendor booths that are a hallmark at festivals, EcoFest will feature a full day of demonstrations with an opportunity to learn about organic gardening, growing hops, raising chickens, making pickles, canning and cooking with local, seasonal foods, bees, worm composting, growing shitake mushrooms and more.

There will be no shortage of things for the youngest crowd to do. Corn hole boards will be available for kids and adults, as well as hula hoops, jump ropes, Kid K’Nex, sidewalk chalk, block play and a trivia wheel. Vi Keenan of Macaroni Kid in Waynesville, a free, green, online resource for parents will be showing kids how to make a macaroni bracelet and a bird feeder using Cheerios.

The whole family can glean tips about recycling, using rain barrels, turning wood into gasoline to power a vehicle and multiple aspects of green building. Festival goers will be able to experience the many green aspects of the college campus, including the platinum-standard Creative Arts Building and the high tunnel greenhouse on campus.

Live entertainment will be provided throughout the day by the musical talents of Simple Folk, Frog Level Philharmonic, Lorraine Conard Band, Blue Ridge Tradition and the Faerie Kim Stiltwalkers. N8 the Great will also be on hand to offer a bit of festival excitement with his juggling skills and storytelling for “kids of all ages”.
