RALEIGH – The N.C. Council for Women (CFW) will present the 2012 Women’s History Month celebration at 6:30 p.m. today in auditorium of the N.C. Museum of History. The program will focus on the impact of women in North Carolina in politics, business, health and the law.
“When women lead, give and vote, women and families win,” said CFW Executive Director Beth Briggs. “Now more than ever, we need to encourage women to raise their voices and to stay engaged in issues that impact lives across our state.”
The keynote address will be delivered by Anita Brown-Graham, Director of the Institute for Emerging Issues at N.C. State University, a public policy organization committed to North Carolina’s future competitiveness. Prior to joining the Emerging Issues Forum, Brown-Graham served as a professor of Law and Government at the UNC School of Government, where she provided training for state and local officials and wrote books on developing the economic base of distressed communities. She is a Trustee of the Z. Smith Reynolds foundation and active on various boards and committees including the North Carolina Small Towns Action Council, the Self Help Fund, MDC, Inc., and the N.C. Rural Economic Development Center.
Brown-Graham will be welcomed by Linda Carlisle, Secretary of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources. A series of Historical Reflections will be provided by local leaders, including: Advocacy – Annette Taylor, N.C. Center for Women in Public Service; Business – Billie Redmond, Coldwell Banker Commercial Trademark Properties; Health – Dr. Laura Gerald, State Health Director; and Law – Christine Walczyck, Wake County
District Court Judge.
Erin Byrd, member of the Fruit of Labor Singing Ensemble, will close the evening with a poetry reading. Note that a voter registration drive organized by Democracy North Carolina will precede the program at 5:30 p.m.
The celebration is a collaboration between the Council, N.C. Museum of History, Democratic Women of Wake County, the American Association of University Women (AAUW), N.C. Women United, Wake County Republican Women’s Club, Women’s Forum of North Carolina, Whole Foods and The Community Deli.
The event is free and open to the public, but registration is requested by calling the Museum’s registration line at 919-807-7992.
