Lt., You may be aware of this from last night’s council meeting. As you
see below, several of us are meeting tomorrow to discuss a city-owned
location where Occupy Asheville and any other organization can assemble
in an overnight encampment type of situation. A local union has offered
to provide for some sanitation needs. I’m not sure if Fire will allow
random tents, campfires, etc. to occur without permits but their initial
reaction to this question was NO. My question for you and perhaps
rather to you for Chief Wood would be if APD will impose any public
safety requirements or if imposed, meeting such requirements internally
as in offering accommodations such as light towers and general security
oversight. Knowing APD’s take on this in advance of our meeting today
will be helpful.

We met briefly with the city manager tonight after the city council
meeting, and based on the city council direction given to staff to work
with Occupy Asheville to identify suitable public space for them to
camp/occupy/practice first amendment rights, we need to meet tomorrow at
2pm in room 209. I am sorry for the short notice. Thanks and we’ll talk
tomorrow.
