HI Franzi, Outside of permitted uses for special events I really have
little control. I know that the Parks department restricts any camping,
overnight events, sleepovers and such in any city park and that policy
may very well be tied to an ordinance. Maybe they could do a street
closure and “occupy a street” - not sure if there are the same overnight
restrictions as are with parks, but even that would be limited to 6 days
in total per 12 month period under permit.
I had provided someone with Occupy Asheville a list of events that were
being held in the downtown parks last week so that they could avoid
those areas in their rallying. I have not provided such list again this
week but would be happy to do so. I think your best bet is by way of
this petition directly to City Council. As long as the group doesn’t
interfere with the use of these spaces for permitted events, I have no
problems with them being there - just don’t have a way to help directly
since I am also limited to park time and use restrictions even under a
special event permit.
Thank you,
Jon Fillman

Subject: Occupy Asheville - advice
Hi Jon,
Hope all is well with you.
Rosetta from Rosetta's Kitchen has started a petition regarding allowing
the "Occupy Asheville" group to assemble peacefully in Pack Square.
There are many business owners who have already signed the petition and
who feel they should be allowed to peacefully assemble for a length of
time. I was wondering if there was a better way - via the events
department - that their assembly could be approved or go to council for
approval? Or if you had any advice on the appropriate course of
action... I have attached the petition she is getting signed.
Of course, I realize, they may have already contacted you regarding
this. I just thought I would try & see if you had any ideas.
Thanks Jon! Look forward to hearing from you.
