Eating out is all about options, and sometimes, diners want to eat 40 ounces of meat, explains Ian Terhune, the regional manager of BT's Burger Joint.

The fast-casual restaurant, which opened in April in Biltmore Park, offers a 40/20 challenge: In 20 minutes or less, eat the 40-ounce burger — five, 8-ounce patties stacked a foot high — and it's free. Successful challengers get their picture on the wall and, probably, a stomachache. “Since the whole Man v. Food show came out,” Terhune says. “People want to see if they have what it takes.”

At the Biltmore Park location, two people have succeeded at eating the mammoth burger in less than 20 minutes. BT's has two other locations in Charlotte. At the Rivergate Parkway location, which opened in 2008, Terhune estimates that there are 40 to 50 pictures on the wall of fame.

The big burgers are certainly a novelty. For the most part, BT's focuses on fare sized for smaller appetites. The menu centers around customizable burgers, salads and hotdogs. “Everything on the menu is a la carte and build your own,” Terhune says. “Our guests can get just a plain burger with American [cheese] and ketchup and mustard, or they can load it up, and get toppings like sweet-potato mustard, honey mustard, chili, slaw, grilled onions, mushrooms, peppers, anything where their imagination can take them.”

Diners choose from 30 burger toppings and 50 salad toppings. The offerings also include chicken sandwiches, turkey burgers, fried pickles, sweet potato fries, shakes, beer and wine.

The restaurant occupies the space next door to Woof Gang Bakery and seats about 85 people inside and 30 on the patio. The business shares owners with Hickory Tavern, and while it's more of a family restaurant than a sports bar, diners can watch the game on several wall-mounted TVs.

BT's Burger Joint, 33 Town Square Blvd., Suite. 150, opens daily at 11 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, it closes at 10 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays, it closes at 11 p.m. For more information, visit btsburgerjoint.com or search for BT's Burgerjoint Biltmore Park on Facebook.

I misread this; I thought it was a ‘420 Challenge’ and I was looking for an entry form.
