Grocery store wars: East Asheville Bi-Lo closing

After opening for business 30 years ago in east Asheville, Bi-Lo is closing its grocery store at 801 Fairview Road.

The local closure comes as part of a decision by Jacksonville, Fla.-based parent company Bi-Lo Holdings to close 23 Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie grocery stores across the country.

Spokesman Brian Write told Supermarket News that the stores being closed “were underperforming.”

The local store is currently holding a liquidation sale. It’s slated to close its doors by Nov. 19 at the latest, according to a local employee who declined to give Xpress a name because they were not authorized to speak to the media. The company’s other stores in Buncombe County will not be closed, according to the employee.

At this writing, a spokesperson at Bi-Lo Holdings had not returned a call from Xpress.

The local area has seen an increase in grocery store competition in recent years. A large new Whole Foods opened this August on Tunnel Road in east Asheville.
