Kids dig gardening. According to the Mens Garden Club of Asheville, a container-garden photo project for Buncombe County elementary-school students has the kids busy planting, observing and using their imaginations and creativity.
Teachers report that participating students keep journals as they design, plant and monitor their gardens — set in such creative abodes as old shoes, antique chairs and butterfly plots.
The participating kids are so excited about the work, teachers report, they run to check their containers first thing each morning.
Thirty-five classes from 13 schools have signed on for the community-outreach program, says Alan Williams with the Mens Garden Club.
From May 7-16, teachers will submit digital photos from their class or garden club. And during that time, two garden-club representatives will make onsite visits to help determine winning projects. Each class must include a title for their container garden, a brief description, and the time spent in preparation and observation.
Two $50 awards will be presented. Judging is based on overall display, effort, creativity, originality and presentation.
Participants include grades K-5 at Avery's Creek Elementary, Black Mountain Primary, Charles T. Koontz Intermediate, Leicesster Elementary, North Buncombe Elementary, Pisgah Elementary, Key School at Carolina Day, Francine Delany New School, Claxton Elementary, Hall Fletcher Elementary, Ira. B. Jones Elementary, Isaac Dickson Elementary and Vance Elementary.
