Thousands of Asheville soccer fans came out to local watering holes June 16 to cheer on the U.S. national team as it beat Ghana in its first match of this year’s World Cup in Brazil.

Late in the game, John Brooks scored the winning goal to give the U.S. a 2-1 lead. In response, local fans joined with others across the globe as they celebrated with fist pumps, screams and chants of “USA!” The victory was extra special because Ghana had beat the U.S. in the last two World Cups. Here’s a look at fans’ reactions at West Asheville Lounge & Kitchen, which showed the match on several big screens:

The U.S. team plays next on June 22 against Portugal at 6 p.m. EST. In the meantime, there’s several other matches per day and many local bars are showing the games on big screens and offering specials. See the game schedule here.
