After a group of doctors declared their discontent about the recent merger with Carolinas Health at the April 16 Jackson County Commissioners meeting, President of MedWest-Harris and MedWest-Swain Steve Heatherly released a statement in response. The doctors also said during the commissioners meeting that the only suitable merger would have been with Mission Hospital. Today, there was a media briefing on the matter at MedWest-Harris. A new $9.3 million surgery center in Haywood County is being financed with equity put up by 20 local doctors who invested capital in exchange for a real estate interest in the project. The arrangement marries the hospital and physician community in an unusual joint venture that was anathema to the area's former hospital management.
