Did you know that each full moon has a name? Most of us have heard of the Harvest Moon, the full moon that occurs in October. In North America, the full moon in February is known as the Snow Moon (or the Storm Moon). February's full moon occurred on Monday of this week, and it made a beautiful entrance over the eastern horizon.
The evening sky holds many wonders — but few are as wondrous as getting to see some of the brightest objects in our sky all clustered together. Such was the case last night when the crescent moon was accompanied by the brightest planets in our sky along with the constellation Orion and the bright star Sirius — an amazing site that you may be able to catch again this evening if you look to the west after the sun sets.
Last Saturday, March 19, a "supermoon" rose over the mountains of WNC. The next day, the spring equinox occurred at 7:21 p.m. EST, marking the start of the new season. These videos capture beautiful imagery of the full moon at its closest point to Earth in nearly 18 years, as well as the dawn of new spring flowers around Beaver Lake in north Asheville.
