Tokyo Story

Movie Information

In Brief: Yasujirô Ozu's Tokyo Story (1953) is not only one of the best films of an illustrious career, it's one of the crowning achievements of cinema as an art form. While Ozu may not have the same level of popular recognition as other Japanese filmmakers like Kurosawa, the humanistic sensibilities of his films convey an emotional weight and dramatic naturalism that is almost without equal. Tokyo Story is a perfect expression of what makes Ozu so special, as this simple story of aging parents visiting their adult children in the big city — only to find that the hastening pace of modern urban life leaves little room for family — is told with such heartbreaking poignancy that it's nearly impossible not to empathize with everyone involved. There are no heroes or villains in Ozu's worldview, only flawed people struggling to come to terms with harsh realities. It's a beautiful film, and one with a capacity for emotional affect that even the most jaded viewer would find difficult to deny.
