Mountain Xpress and Sherwood’s Music present: Comet West

Comet West at Sherwood's Music (Carrie Eidson/ Mountain Xpress)

Mountain Xpress and Sherwood’s Music are partnering to showcase local musicians through a series of stripped-down performances for the web. This week Comet West performs “Bear Trap.”

Comet West is vocalist and guitarist Samuel Robbins, bassist Britt Benson-Greer, guitarist Shane Myers-Bennett and drummer Nick Rodriguez. Benson-Greer, Myers-Bennett and Robbins were in Asheville post-rock band Elkmont Place before joining with Rodriguez to form Comet West in 2012.

In late 2013, Comet West played the Moog Store as part of AHA AVL, in addition to releasing their EP Weaker Things, on which Bear Trap appears. The EP was recorded and mixed in part at UNCA Asheville Studios and in part by Asheville musicians Kenneth Harrington and Zach Wright. You can listen and purchase Weaker Things on the band’s Bandcamp page.

Comet West are currently gearing up for out-of-town touring, as well as writing songs for their next EP. Their next Asheville show is at the Odditorium on July 27. You can receive updates and connect with them at on their Facebook page.

Thanks for reading through to the end…

We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.

We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.
