A farewell to Ramsey, Young

Nathan Ramsey (pictured) has been chair of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners for eight years, and Commissioner David Young has been on the board for 16. Tomorrow, the public will have a chance to say farewell to both at a Pack Place party.

Ramsey lost a re-election campaign to Vice Chair David Gantt, and Young chose to run for State Treasurer instead of trying to keep his county board seat (he was defeated in the Democratic primary). The county is throwing a farewell party for both men at the bottom floor of Pack Place tomorrow (Wednesday, Nov. 19) at 6:30 p.m.

The new Board of Commissioners, with Gantt as chair and new commissioners Holly Jones and K. Ray Bailey, will be sworn in Monday, Dec. 1, at 9 a.m. in the Planning Conference Room located at 30 Valley St.

I hope the new commissioners will be strong in preserving the ecology of these beautiful mountains. Wildlife, water quality, air quality, open spaces–all these values need stronger proponents with vision and courage to stand up to ill-advised development.
