Asheville City Council: March 11 meeting preview

Recognition of local Nobel laureates from the Asheville-based National Climatic Data Center will kick off Asheville City Council’s March 11 meeting.

The scientists were among many individuals, including former Vice President Al Gore, awarded a piece of the Nobel Peace Prize last year for their work in studying and spotlighting global warming and climate change.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. Council also will delve into the city’s towing ordinance to ponder possible future changes, and will consider legislative priorities it will eventually forward to the area’s Congressional delegation for its consideration.

For those who eschew automobiles, but don’t always want to pedal or hoof it downtown, the Council also will consider an ordinance granting a franchise to operate a pedal-bicycle taxi service in the city. Your Chariot Awaits, LLC wants to operate a pedal-bicycle taxi service limited to a maximum of five pedicab vehicles within the Central Business District, the River Arts District and the Historic Montford District.

And, of course there will be public hearings on a handful of zoning and conditional-use permits. A trio of such hearings to be held will:

• Consider a conditional-use permit for the Zona Village Project located on Buxton Avenue for an 11-story mixed-use building.

• Consider the conditional zoning request for the project identified as Jim Barkley Toyota, located at 777 Brevard Road. The request seeks the rezoning of 34 & 35 Pine Lane from Residential Single-Family, High Density District to Regional Business Conditional Zoning District to be utilized for additional storage area and overflow parking for the existing car dealership.

• Consider the conditional zoning for property located at 3 Springside Road from Residential Single Family, High Density District to Community Business One Conditional Zoning for the development of an office/light-commercial building. The project is seeking modifications of property line buffer requirements.

The meeting will take place Tuesday, March 11, at 5 p.m. in Council chambers on the second floor of City Hall. Those who can’t attend can also view the meeting live by tuning into the city government television channel 11 on Charter Cable.
