Asheville City Council preview: double-header

Provided snow doesn’t intervene, Asheville City Council is starting off the week with two back-to-back meetings: first with a rare joint meeting with the city school board tonight, Feb. 10, and its regular meeting Tuesday, Feb. 11.

The joint meeting begins at 5 p.m. Feb. 10 at Isaac Dickson Elementary. Council and the school board will discuss the achievement gap, hear an update on new school construction and the search for a new school superintendent.

The Feb. 11 meeting (assuming weather doesn’t make a rare intervention) sees Council back in its regular chambers in City Hall, with the 192-unit Avalon development back on the agenda. At its Dec. 10 meeting, Council members expressed doubts about the proposed development, especially its lack of affordable housing and the developers’ request to rezone land previously designated for industrial development. However, in this case the staff report accompanying the matter notes that the Economic Development Coalition didn’t feel the project should be blocked for that reason.

Other items on the agenda include regular support for Moogfest (and $40,000 in cash for this year’s festival), allowing electrical fences on industrial sites, and revising the way the city deals with waste management.

Asheville City Council meets at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Council’s chambers on the second floor of City Hall.
