Buncombe County commissioners preview: Playing the field-attachment0

At its Oct. 18 meeting, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners will consider a proposal to lease soccer fields at the Buncombe County Sports Park in Enka-Candler to the Asheville Buncombe Youth Soccer Association.

Under the agreement, the nonprofit would be charged with maintenance and scheduling for the seven tournament-quality soccer fields, which are located off Sand Hill School Road near U.S. 19-23. The county would provide a five year lease at $1 per year, and would allow ABYSA to use its field maintenance equipment. The county would continue to be responsible for maintenance and scheduling at the rest of the park.

Commissioners will also consider a recommendation by the Buncombe County Planning Board to make minor changes in the county’s zoning ordinance to tighten the regulation of retaining walls. The board adopted a comprehensive policy on retaining walls in June.

The original agenda for the Oct. 18 meeting also included a hearing on the county’s decision to condemn and demolish the contaminated former CTS of Asheville plant on Mills Gap Road. However, the property owner, Mills Gap Road Associates, is in the process of appealing that decision and requested that the county delay the hearing until the next meeting of the board on Nov. 1.

The board will meet at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 18, in the commissioners’ chambers, located at 30 Valley St. A short pre-meeting review of the agenda will begin at 4:15 p.m.
