Buncombe GOP Chair Tim Johnson will resign, move to Durham

Buncombe County Republican Party Chair Tim Johnson, who was recently elected Vice Chair of the state party, will step down from his local leadership post on July 31, according to an announcement yesterday. County Vice Chair Robert Malt will take over as chair.

Johnson will soon move to Durham with his family. According to the announcement, the primary reason for the step is a professional opportunity for his wife, though it will also put him closer to the state party headquarters.

“Throughout my campaign for state Vice Chairman, and through my time as County Chairman, my wife has supported me through good times and bad. She has stood by me and given me the strength I needed,” Johnson declares in the announcement. “I never intended to leave Buncombe County and I plan to maintain strong ties here, but it’s my turn now to support my wife and her goals.”

Johnson announced the decision at the party’s Annual Chairman’s Picnic on Saturday. In the announcement, he also expresses confidence in Malt, who has served as the local party’s 1st Vice Chair since March, calling him “a strategic thinker who knows what takes to win.” The GOP didn’t fare well locally, statewide or nationally in the last elections.

Malt will be the fourth chair of the local Republican Party in as many years. Johnson’s two predecessors either resigned or refused to run for re-election due to battles within the party.

Johnson’s rise to state Vice Chair — making him the first African-American to hold a leadership position in the state GOP — was marked by a controversial and sometimes bitter battle, with critics questioning his academic credentials and saying he wasn’t forthcoming about a 1996 domestic violence conviction in Ohio. However, Johnson won the Vice Chair’s spot handily at the party’s June convention and some local activists have credited him with bringing energy and better organization to the party.

In his new post, Johnson has promised to work to end factionalism, bring in new demographic groups to the GOP and better use technology.

The full announcement from the Buncombe County Republican Party is below.

—David Forbes, staff writer

Timothy F. Johnson, Chairman of the Buncombe County Republican Party, will step down, effective July 31. 1st Vice Chairman, Robert Malt, will step in as Chairman. Johnson first announced this decision at yesterday’s Annual Chairman’s Picnic, citing a career opportunity in the Raleigh area for his wife as the primary reason. Johnson was elected as the state Vice Chairman last month and this move also puts him closer to the state Republican Party’s headquarters.

“Throughout my campaign for state Vice Chairman, and through my time as County Chairman, my wife has supported me through good times and bad. She has stood by me and given me the strength I needed,” says Johnson. “I never intended to leave Buncombe County and I plan to maintain strong ties here, but it’s my turn now to support my wife and her goals.”

Malt has served as 1st Vice Chairman since the March County Convention and is responsible for bringing several new precinct chairs and area coordinators to the party. He has worked extensively in recent months to organize the precincts in preparation for the upcoming 2009 and 2010 elections. Johnson expressed confidence that his resignation would not have a negative impact on the progress that has been made.

“We have a solid group of young and energetic officers who are eager to move our party forward.” Johnson said. “Robert is a strategic thinker who knows what takes to win. He is surrounded by a dedicated organization of volunteers who are willing to work hard to move our community and our country in the right direction.”

Johnson expects to return to Buncombe County often in his role as NCGOP Vice Chairman. He has already visited several counties throughout the state since his election. The NCGOP Plan of Organization states, “The Vice-Chairman shall maintain close liaison with the District and County Vice-Chairman and encourage and direct activities in the Party structure.”

Johnson has been credited with increasing diversity within the party, embracing the use of effective technology, and uniting the local party around the Republican Principles. He was first elected as Chairman of the Buncombe GOP in March 2008.

So he is no longer Dr. Tim Johnson? Just like that?
I’m a Dr. now I’m not. This is seriously manipulative if it’s true that he isn’t a doctor.

2. Rob Close

so basically he was an affirmative action hire, done by republicans, who wanted a black man bad enough that they didn’t look deeper into his credentials.

clearly nobody drops the title of Dr. unless it was total BS and they got caught.

Meanwhile real black doctors out there are getting arrested for disorderly conduct by white officers who refuse to give their name & badge numbers and then falsify police reports. Well, at least one.

3. Zora Hays

He was not an affirmative action hire. A local
GOPer, Bill Lack, had met Tim Johnson in a
community org. and asked him to apply to the
nominating committee. There was a real shortage
of people willing to be nominated for Chairman
of BCGOP, and he was nominated from the Nominating
Committee. He served one year and was re-elected.
Tim had not previously worked at a precinct level
or any other level of the party in NC. He is from Ohio and was a democrat there and did run for office there, but did not win. He has basically been using Buncombe County for a step up the ladder. His particular intent was to remove the ole timers, etc. and put in the
supporters of Ron Paul. He was successful in
doing that. Timothy F. Johnson,PHD {that is what
he told everyone} is now moving to Durham area as
far as the scuttlebutt goes. Mr. Robert Malt, a
very capable Ron Paul supporter is now our Chair
until we are allowed to vote him or his nominee
for the position up or down. Tim is now Vice-Chair of NCGOP. There is other not so pleasant
info on our X-chairman that I am definitely not
going to go into.

4. Diana

PFKaP – The leadership page of buncombegop.org has not changed since around the time the new officers were elected in March.

He has not dropped the Dr. from his name.

5. Dionysis

Then I guess I’ll have to stop calling myself ‘Reverend’, even with my $25 ‘divinity’ degree I bought from a mail order firm in California 20 years ago.

6. Piffy!

Diana-Really? the page never listed him as having a PhD? why would he not list such a major achievement? Robert Malt lists his MBA degree from the University of Maryland. That seems quite odd to me.

7. Dionysis

“the page never listed him as having a PhD?”

Perhaps it listed him as having a Ph.D. previously, but it sure doesn’t now.

As for LaSalle University, there is a legitimate school by that name in Philadelphia (an expensive Catholic university). There is also a diploma mill in Louisiana with the same name, which was one of several scams run by one Thomas Jane Kirk (a/k/a ‘Thomas McPherson’). He was indicted for fraud and served several years in prison.

8. travelah

Mr. Johnson has yet to satisfy any inquiry into his alleged doctorate. Until he does there is a black cloud hanging over him.

9. Zora Hays

Dionyhsis: I was and am aware of the very fine
LaSalle University. I had read at one point
about the other LaSalle that was closed down, but
I did not have complete facts in front of me and
did not want to write inaccuracies. A number of
questions have been raised and no doubt will
eventually be laid on the table. My problem
with Tim Johnson, and I certainly have one,
was his attempts at constraints on free speech
and his unrestrained temper which I was the
recipient of. I cannot expect others who have
not experienced what I did to automatically
agree. However, the honesty of my character
should be fairly well known. I believe in being
truthful in all respects and all the time.

10. John

A “Black Cloud’, ‘travelah’? Typical anonymous, liberal response. You Bleeding-Hearts are the most racist ones out there, as proved by your post.

11. Rob Close

“He holds degrees from The University of Arizona, Troy University and LaSalle
University” ( http://www.ncgopvicechair.com/mybackground.html )

It makes one wonder whether all those other accomplishments of his are real or not. Which is extra sad if he really was trying to recruit more Ron Paul followers, because I seriously think the country would benefit if all the republicans were as honest and intelligent as Dr. Paul is.

12. tatuaje

A “Black Cloud’, ‘travelah’? Typical anonymous, liberal response. You Bleeding-Hearts are the most racist ones out there, as proved by your post.

Holy cow.

This is priceless!

The apocalypse is upon us.

travelhaha has been accused of being an ‘obamunist librul’!

hahahahahahahahahaha

13. travelah

Somebody uses the name john and accuses another of being anonymous … er … ok. This place is more ‘tard than Topix. HA

14. Rob Close

which is why people like ‘john’ are simply to be ignored and not taken seriously.

use your full name and your opinion will matter.

15. Dionysis

“A “Black Cloud’, ‘travelah’? Typical anonymous, liberal response. You Bleeding-Hearts are the most racist ones out there, as proved by your post.”

It seems that ‘John’ is unfamiliar with travelah’s views, as represented by his past posts. Otherwise, such an absurd comment would never have been made. tatuaje is right; it is hilarious.

I have no bone to pick on this subject at all, and have no reason to doubt your truthfulness. I don’t know Mr.Johnson, other than meeting him one time at a social event where I sat with him and his wife, and engaged in light chit-chat. I will say that in that one experience, he did come across as sort of pompous and slightly arrogant. More than that, I cannot say (nor do I have any interest in the subject, to be honest).

17. Bill Milestone

It never ceases to amaze me how us liberals can look so hard for something to throw at a conservative black man, or conservative woman. As if these 2 groups have to be liberal. Do we hold Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton to such tough standards as Mr Johnson and Sara Palin? Or do we give the people who agree with us a pass? I am for treating everyone the same regardless of their opinions on matters political.

18. Piffy!

Totally, Bill! I mean, why hasnt Obama proven he is a lawyer?? Sure, the liberal media just accepts that as fact! Or Hillary? I mean, she [1]says she’s a Clinton, but how do we really know?

Obviously, asking Tim Johnson how he got a PhD in a program from a university that doesnt offer them is just liberal media bias.

What next? Will they actually try and confirm Mr. Johnson’s statements about his ex-wife’s “Support” of him? Sheeesh! Just believe what he says! He’s a Black Republican!!

19. Rob Close

it’s not that we’re looking hard, it’s that there’s an unanswered question that is festering, bill.

if you think we shouldn’t look into this because he’s a black man, how is that not racism? should we hold black america to lower standards?

20. Dionysis

Mr. Milestone,

On the point about “tough standards,” (and specifically regarding Sarah Palin), it is not unreasonable to hold her to the same standard as Obama, Clinton and anyone else running for higher office: that they demonstrate a functioning brain and a modicum of knowledge.

21. Bill Milestone

I don’t recall Sara Palin getting the same treatment as Obama. Obama not only got a compete pass, but the press actually were cheerleaders for him. One NYT columnist, a liberal himself, admitted that journalism was absent in the mainstream media when it came to Obama. Except for Fox, of course. Fair and balanced no matter who the candidate is. In fact, I watched the “rightwinger” O’Reilly interview the 2 democrat candidates. He was fair and respectful, yet asked the important questions of Obama and Hillary.

On the other hand, Sara Palin was given an anal exam so intrusive that anyone with a modicum of fairness and objectivity can see it for what it was. Her family was attacked. She was vilified for actually believing a baby in the womb deserves to be born. How radical, huh? Then a short time back, a late night “comic” New Yorkah called her 14 year old daughter a whore. It took a lot of pressure to get him to properly apologize.

Why do we liberals hate our conservatives so much? We are supposed to be the tolerant party. Yet, when it comes to opposing political views, we tend to be very knee jerk bigoted.

Let’s be more fair and talk issues, not personalities.

22. Dionysis

“I don’t recall Sara Palin getting the same treatment as Obama.”

Huh? Everything Obama had any connection with, regardless of how tenuous, was scrutinized to the nth degree (Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, his missed votes in the Illinois Senate, etc.), yet Sarah Palin, unknown to anyone before McCain picked her (after a failure by his campaign to vet her) was asked basic, rudimentary questions less comprehensive than would be given to an applicant for a McDonald’s job, and demonstrated an abysmal lack of knowledge (or even curiosity, as we now know from former campaign staffers). And you claim this was unfair?

You’re right…Palin was treated like some special education student instead of a candidate for the second most powerful job in the world. How unfair.

“Her family was attacked.”

So it was fine for Palin to “trot out her family at every public event like two-headed heifers” as one commentator noted at the time, but if the media or anyone else even touched upon anything about her family, they were being “attacked.”

Bill O’Reilly was “fair and respectful?” And Fox was “fair and balanced?” You should be there spokesman.

Funny, you claim to be a “liberal” but are spewing out the exact same talking points and faux outrage prescribed by the right-wing spin masters. And with all due respect, it was rubbish then and it’s rubbish now.

23. Piffy!

So, “Bill Milestone”, you dont find it odd that Tim Johnson claims to have a PhD from a University that does not offer them?

Do you really think people noticing that massive discrepancy is the “Liberal Media Bias”?

Or are you just playing devil’s advocate and conveniently avoiding the actual facts of the case in favor of partisan rhetoric?

And what does Sarah Palin or Barack Obama have to do with Tim Johnson, anyway? Nothing at all, it would seem.

24. Bill Milestone

“And what does Sarah Palin or Barack Obama have to do with Tim Johnson, anyway? Nothing at all, it would seem.” -Dionisis

My point is that most of the media are, and were, very biased against Sara Palin. Because she is a conservative woman. And not from the northeast or California yet. But Alaska, which the east coast media elite considers too unsophisticated to count. Mr Johnson is a conservative black gentleman. They both have these two things in common: they are both conservative, and they both are members of groups that us liberals claim belong to us. So we liberals tend to get our noses out of joint when we see “our” people go for the conservative side. As if, “how can anyone be so stupid”? Yet, as a free thinking American, I am happy there are people who refuse to be pigeonholed as belonging to any particular voting/thinking block. Even though I disagree on the issues. I am glad these two people have the strength of character and independence to go against the grain, and speak their positions well.

Dionisis, Obama trotted out his family constantly. As did Senator McCain. It is a politicians thing. Yet, I don’t remember anyone hounding his young daughters. Or calling them names…thankfully. A NYC comedian called Sara’s 14 year old daughter a “whore”. Mr Obama has some real questions about his actual place of birth. If he was not born in the USA, he is ineligible to be President of the USA. Yet, our liberal press never investigated the charges in detail, and tried their best to sweep it under the rug. As they did with all the other hubris around Mr Obama. And there is plenty. And Dionisis, I am a liberal, but I am not blinded by my views to the point where I actually hate the other side and believe far leftwing talking points about conservatives without looking into it myself. You would’ve been easy fodder for the incoming government in Germany in the early 1930s. -:)

I do wish ALL journalism outlets, both print and video, were more balanced. Like Fox is. And ABC News does a not too bad job at. But NBC, CBS, MSNBC, and CNN are so lacking in objective journalism standards that they act like a propaganda arm of the liberal wing of the democrat party. Not very professional. I for one am I liberal who wants information broadcast, then I DECIDE which view to take.

25. tatuaje

‘Bill Milestone’, you are more transparent than the bug splattered face shield on my motorcycle helmet.

I am glad these two people have the strength of character and independence to go against the grain, and speak their positions well.

And therein lies one of your bigger problems right there, ‘Bill’. The fact that you think Palin & Johnson have “strong characters” & “speak their positions well.” Have you really ever listened to Palin speak? Did you catch her little impromptu speech where she tried to explain why she was quitting? Do you consider that ‘speaking well’?

And Johnson has ‘strong character’? Does that normally involve lying about your education?

Mr Obama has some real questions about his actual place of birth. If he was not born in the USA, he is ineligible to be President of the USA.

Jebus Henry Christ on a pogo stick. You must be the first ‘liberal birther’ I’ve come across.

Seriously? Do you really think Obama was not born in this country? Even though it has been PROVEN, again and again, that he was?

I don’t like the guy. I didn’t vote for him. And I’ve got to admit to a certain amount of fondness for one or two choice conspiracy theories. But give me a break. I could post links to many sites debunking this silly little myth that you’ve been spoon-fed by News Corp, but come on. Do a little digging from someone besides Fox, would ya?

Here, I’ll give you a hand. Here’s two reliable sources.

http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_in_the_usa.html

http://www.kansascity.com/437/story/1359646.html

There are plenty more. Go ahead you wingnut, look for yourself. Just promise that you’ll look somewhere besides a source owned by News Corp. Preferably one that is actually independent. I know, there aren’t many of those left, but there are a few and I bet you can find them if you really want to.

You would’ve been easy fodder for the incoming government in Germany in the early 1930s.

Says the guy that gets all of his news from Fox. Loosen up the laces on them jack boots there fella and maybe you can think with a little clarity.

I do wish ALL journalism outlets, both print and video, were more balanced. Like Fox is.

Classic.

ABC News does a not too bad job at. But NBC, CBS, MSNBC, and CNN are so lacking in objective journalism standards that they act like a propaganda arm of the liberal wing of the democrat party.

Actually, they work as propaganda arms for the corporate interests that own them.

26. Dionysis

““And what does Sarah Palin or Barack Obama have to do with Tim Johnson, anyway? Nothing at all, it would seem.” -Dionisis

You are attributing this to the wrong person. The quote was from The(PFKaP), not me.

“most of the media are, and were, very biased against Sara Palin. Because she is a conservative woman. And not from the northeast or California yet.”

That is an opinion that does not seem to have any substantiation. Any ‘media bias’ that developed in the wake of McCain selecting this veritable unnknown seemed to stem from her abysmal lack of knowledge, and her propensity to lie. For example, when Katie Couric asked her “what newspapers” she reads (a benign and reasonable question to learn a bit about someone running for high office), she either could not or would not answer it. The next day, however, she was all over the television claiming the question was a slam against Alaskans, and that the question implied they’re all a bunch of illiterate dullards. A complete lie.

Palin has “strenght of character?” I guess that is manifested in her bailing out of her job mid-way through the term, claiming that “losers” would hunker down and finish the term, but since she’s “a fighter,” she quit instead.

“Dionisis, Obama trotted out his family constantly.”

Completely untrue. Obama barely allowed his daughters to be near a camera other than the night he secured the nomination. Recall how unhappy he was when they received some media scrutiny when they were on vacation? Michelle Obama was quite visible throughout, but not the daughters.

The “NY comedian” was David Letterman, and he absolutely did NOT call that unknown (to the public) anything of the sort. The word ‘whore’ was never used (it’s can be viewed on youtube, if you need a refresher), and he remarks were directed at the 18 year old pregnant-out-of-wedlock daughter who then goes around preaching abstinence. You are completely wrong, but once again are echoing the right-wing talking points pushed at that time.

And you’re on the birther bandwagon? You question his birthplace too? How did he get his U.S. State Department issued passport 26 years ago then? Did he put a witches curse on someone (oh, sorry, that would have been Sarah Palin with the witchcraft)?

And now your mouthing the Nazi analogy? And you keep saying that those propagandists as Fox are “fair and balanced?” Do you work for them, as you sound like one of their PR people.

No ‘liberal’ would come close to embracing the kind of wingnuttery you’re spewing out. It seems pretty clear that you are simply another right-wing troll. Not that you aren’t free to engage in whatever easily discredited bilge you wish, but to claim you’re anything but what you are is laughable.

But we can all use a good laugh sometimes.

27. Piffy!

Totally, Bill! You librulz have it out for Tim Johnson just cuz he refuses to prove how he got a PhD from a University that does not offer them. It’s Outrageous!

You are right, we should not ask questions. It’s just a PhD, anyway, right? Real working people dont care about that crap. Hell, I tell people i’m a Dr. all the time. It’s not like im trying to practice medicine or anything. now thats a real doctor, not some fancy letters you got for reading books while we were out working a real job!

28. Piffy!

Oh. And Sarah Palin has absolutely ####ing nothing to do with this Local WNC issue.

29. Bill Milestone

“‘Bill Milestone’, you are more transparent than the bug splattered face shield on my motorcycle helmet.” –‘tatuaje’

‘Tatuaje’, what is transparent here is your angry tone. Relax my friend. No need to get so worked up just because someone has a view different from you. Have I listened to Governor Palin? Yes I have. And that is the reason I have respect for her. I wonder if you have really listened to her…objectively that is, and outside your talking points box. As far as Mr Johnson, I think it is cool that a black man was elected to chair the republicans hereabouts. Just like it is cool a black man was elected President of the USA. Ground has been covered here.

As far as ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, and CNN being puppets for the corporate interests that “own them”…really? Being a propaganda arm of the liberal wing of my party, the democrats, makes them corporate spokesmen? No way Jay.

‘Tatuje’, I think you need to sit down in a quiet room and consider just what makes you come to political points of view. Are you just soaking up propaganda from the TV networks, or The New York Times, or are you just reflecting what your set of friends think? Try thinking on your own. Listen to diverse points of view, without making personal judgements about the character of the messenger, and see if you always come up with a knee jerk answer that could be straight out of the Huffington Post.

I still champion a professional, therefore OBJECTIVE, press. It is what helps keep our politicians honest. And it is one of the reasons I am a proud liberal democrat.

30. Rob Close

this bill fellow has hilarious opinions. i’m having some trouble taking them seriously.

i’ve never heard anyone who described themselves as a liberal consider fox as fair or balanced. may i suggest watching some daily show?

and to tell people not to relax after implying that they were sheep who would have gone along with the nazi’s…give me a break! now i’m starting to think he’s a hard-core conservative who is dressing up in sheep’s clothes to make his views seem more palatable. but honestly, no self-respecting intelligent liberal holds opinions like bill.

31. Dionysis

“i’m starting to think he’s a hard-core conservative who is dressing up in sheep’s clothes to make his views seem more palatable”

That’s my take on him as well. Nothing else makes much sense.

32. travelah

no self-respecting intelligent liberal
Now there is an oxymoron for the ages.

33. Bill MIlestone

“i’ve never heard anyone who described themselves as a liberal consider fox as fair or balanced. may i suggest watching some daily show?” – Rob Close

Rob and Dionisis, perhaps you two need to widen your circle of friends, and especially widen your sources of information to include divergent points of view. Because right now it seems you too live in a black & white world of democrat = always right & always a good person; republican = always wrong & always a bad person. This is a very narrow world you two are living in. Branch out. Think for yourselves. Don’t be a mind-numbed robot who parrots The Daily Show, Huffington Post, The NYT, without thinking critically on your own. Most of my positions are liberal, but not in a lockstep way. Sometimes a republican is right. And I am enough my own man to recognize it when it happens.

” ‘no self-respecting intelligent liberal’
Now there is an oxymoron for the ages.” — travelah

LOL, good one travelah. I wish my fellow liberals, Dionisis and Rob, could laugh at themselves now and then and take themselves so seriously.

34. Dionysis

“no self-respecting intelligent liberal

Now there is an oxymoron for the ages.”

You wish.

“Political scientists and psychologists have noted that, on average, conservatives show more structured and persistent cognitive styles, whereas liberals are more responsive to informational complexity, ambiguity and novelty. We tested the hypothesis that these profiles relate to differences in general neurocognitive functioning using event-related potentials, and found that greater liberalism was associated with stronger conflict-related anterior cingulate activity, suggesting greater neurocognitive sensitivity to cues for altering a habitual response pattern.”

http://www.nature.com/neuro/journal/v10/n10/abs/nn1979.html

A real oxymoron would be that a band of hooligans who crow about ‘freedom’ are being bussed to various town hall meetings across the country to disrupt free speech and debate.

“We support freedom…now shut up!”

35. Ken Hanke

That’s my take on him as well. Nothing else makes much sense.

Well, once upon a time he called himself “middle of the road,” but that was several incarnations ago and this is even funnier.

36. Piffy!

Well, once upon a time he called himself “middle of the road,” but that was several incarnations ago and this is even funnier.

You have to admit, though, he is really coming along in his character development. This newest guy can even (almost) form complete sentences.

37. Ken Hanke

This newest guy can even (almost) form complete sentences.

Ask him how he feels about John Waters.

38. Bill Milestone

Am I missing out an inside joke here Mr Hanky? And who, pray tell, is John Water?

You need to stay on thread and debate my points of view. Or are you able to? You parrot talking points, and once you have regurgitated that, you have nothing left but this? LOL. I am surprised that My Hanky can’t seem to write something on thread, and on debate point. After all, he is supposed to be a professional writer.

Let’s hear it on the issues! Mr Johnson is a fine man. I wish him well in Durham. We will miss him in the mountains!

39. Ken Hanke

debate my points of view.

Oh, please. No one is buying your claims of being a liberal, Mr. Millstone.
