Thanks for reading through to the end…

We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.

We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.

Before you comment

The comments section is here to provide a platform for civil dialogue on the issues we face together as a local community. Xpress is committed to offering this platform for all voices, but when the tone of the discussion gets nasty or strays off topic, we believe many people choose not to participate. Xpress editors are determined to moderate comments to ensure a constructive interchange is maintained. All comments judged not to be in keeping with the spirit of civil discourse will be removed and repeat violators will be banned. See here for our terms of service. Thank you for being part of this effort to promote respectful discussion.

Besides feeling good about themselves, what exactly was accomplished by the protesters? Did Progress Energy have a revelation and decide to go 100% green?

Really what was accomplished outside of self-satisfaction and a completion of “works” in the green religion?

Nuclear is bad. Coal is bad. Gas and oil is bad. It is now known that wind turbines kill about 400,000 birds per year so they’re out too I guess.

I’ve got a plan though. About 6.8 billion people need to remove themselves from the planet. A couple hundred million of us will live in temperate places, maybe use a little hydro and tidal power and all will be well.

I am for nuclear power … but I do understand protesting … it is not about feeling goof about yourself!! It is about getting attention and they accomplished that!

  4. maggie1

I would like to get connected to this group. Is there a contact for the protesters?

  5. Asheville Dweller

So did they walk ride a bike to the Protest?

Probably not, they probably have a Enviromentl Sticker on a SUV, that has a bike attached to it.

  6. HAHAHAH LIBERALS! HAHAHAHA! LIBERALS!

Hey, honey, where’s our Tea Party outfits? There’s a rally next week. No, not a protest. A rally. Of course there’s a difference. Protests are for hippies. We’re patriots!

  7. dpewen

Mat, that is funny! I love how the tea party members always talk about patriots!! I would love to see the patriot act repleaded! I am not a patriot since I am not a tea party member!!

“Look, look, see, see, MoonGlow! The short-haired people are out!”

“Well, MoonDog, let’s have our own long-haired protest across the street!”

“We have suffered under violent class oppression far too long!”

“Revolting oppressors! Revolting elitists! Abolish them all! Abolish existing conditions!”

“We don’t need you, Progressive Energy! You cause our rents to go up!”

“And the rents are too damn high!”

“We can haul in firewood! And burn cow chips! We don’t need you revolting capitalistic energy people!”

“We the Proletariat can do it ourselves through self-determination!”

“In our own autonomous and self-made not-for-profit economy!”

“Oh wait, Moonglow! The capitalists will have free food over at the Big Love Fest! Let’s go over there and consume!”

    “Ethically, of course!”

“It’ll give us a break from dumpster diving!”

  9. Betty Cloer Wallace

“But MoonDog, doesn’t your trust fund hold lotsa stock in Progressive Energy and other utilities? Maybe we ought’nt to be out here conspicuously consuming all these delectible capitalist canapes unless we think we deserve them, Big Love Fest or not?”

“Well, I’ll go down there tomorrow and ask my trustee.”

“Okay. But for now let’s us just pig out! I’m a’thinking we deserve it!”

“We do, MoonGlow! Oh, we do!”
