Into the Forums

What’s new on the Mountain Xpress Forums this week? Let’s take a look.

Racism is always a tricky topic, but that doesn’t mean that even well-intentioned, intelligent people are always free of racial prejudice. Which is the topic examined on this thread, where the “boarders” (that is, the forum regulars) talk about their prejudices. As piffy points out, “They think that as long as they don’t dress up in white sheets they’re in the clear. Here’s a hint: nearly every white person i have ever met in my life is a racist. (Yes, , I am a white guy, so I get to call us out on these things).”

As many parents know, traveling with young children and babies can be a stressful experience, as
noted in this thread. Tricks and tips to keep the kids occupied and the parents sane are helpful, but even a little commiseration can go a long way. Of course, true to form, jokester brebro has his own approach. “It helps if you start them out right by finding a random bratty kid in a Wal-Mart or other public place and just knock them out, then they won’t ever mess with you themselves. I heard it also works in prison.”

Now that we’re at the end of the first month of 2010, the novelty of “best of the last decade” lists is starting to wear off. Or is it? Because this thread is all about the best director of the last 10 years. Is it Wes Anderson? Danny Boyle? Clint Eastwood? Film-loving arguments abound!

What a rotten week! First ground-breaking revisionist historian Howard Zinn dies, followed shortly thereafter by ground-breaking author J.D. Salinger. But at least we can still talk about their lives and impact over on the forums.

Of course, this is just a sample of the new discussions that took place on the forum this week. Don’t see a discussion about that burning topic you’d like to talk about? Why not start your own? Just came by for a short visit and to take a look at a 26-page-long thread in your archives.

Looks like from the comment above by Piffy, you have eloquence galore here.

    Bye now.

Or to quote a part of James McMurtry’s Choctaw Bingo, “Strap those kids in and give em a little bit of vodka in a cherry coke…”

  3. shadmarsh

I find most of the above verbal skirmishing to be, well, mostly embarrassing and certainly long-winded.

I just came by to let you know exactly how far this discourse has missed the mark in living up to my dubious standards of being worthwhile of my own self-important participation. Instead of doing that, however, I have decided to break new ground on the Internet and use sarcasm to demean you, topped off with a smug salutation to disguise my inability to either function in a group or to control my bowels. Great work! Ta-Ta!

Every ethnic group/culture/society has very significant components that are racist/culturalist/nationalist. Its old news.

  6. Piffy!

    Old news!?!

Crap. And here we were trying to compete with CNN.

Steve: You most certainly must flush all the topics dealing with issues that are older than today, ASAP.

Racist: 1. Slang: Extremely Disparaging and Offensive term for a white person. 2: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities, if promoted by white people. 3: a belief that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race, if promoted by white people
