Leaf collection season in full swing

The city of Asheville’s leaf collection season has begun. During leaf season, the Sanitation Division collects bagged and loose leaves separately according to schedules based on your trash collection day. Residents using either bagged leaf collection or loose leaf vacuuming collection should separate their leaves from trash and other waste and place leaves at the curb away from the street and storm drains. 

Note: Burning of leaves is not permitted in the city.

Bagged Leaf Collection: Sanitation crews collect bagged or containerized leaves twice a month during leaf season. Residents should place unsealed bagged or containerized leaves at the curb on Monday by 7 a.m. of their scheduled collection week, and crews will remove the leaves by Friday, leaving residents’ bags or containers for reuse after collection.

If your trash day is on Monday or Tuesday, bagged leaf pickup will occur on Nov. 17, Dec. 1 and 15, and Jan. 5 and 19. Households with trash days on Wednesday or Thursday can place leaves at the curb for pick up on Nov. 10 and 24, Dec. 8 and 22, and Jan. 12 and 26.

Loose Leaf Vacuum: Loose leaves are collected twice in each area during the loose leaf season. Leaves should be raked in a pile close to the curb or street by 7 a.m. by the start of the collection date. Check the schedule carefully for the dates that the leaves will be collected. Per City Ordinance, loose leaves must not be raked into the street or block any storm drains.  Violators risk a fine of $100 if this happens. Here are a few guidelines to ensure that your loose leaves are collected:

•  Do not mix other yard waste with the
    leaves.
•  Do not mix any trash with the leaves.
•  Make sure the pile is not blocked by
  parked cars.
•  Make sure the pile is close to the curb
  or street.
•  Have the piles ready by 7 a.m. on or
  before the collection date.

Vacuum Collection Schedule:
If your trash day is: 
Monday: Vacuum collection begins Nov. 3 & Jan. 5
Tuesday: Dec. 1 & Jan. 26
Wednesday: Nov. 17 & Jan. 14
Thursday: Dec. 15 & Feb 4

The city also encourages residents and businesses to compost their leaves if possible. And those who would like to add leaves to their existing compost can contact the city and have fresh leaves delivered by calling 251-1122.
