This year’s Asheville Mardi Gras parade had an appropriate theme — The Royal Wedding. The king and queen of the event this year actually got married a few hours before the parade. Riding atop a white cake, surrounded with colorful revelers and lots of cajun music and fun, you could believe, for a while, that you were in New Orleans.
Gray North Carolina skies and downtown streets were flooded with green, gold, red and purple costumed people and beads of all shapes and sizes. Zyedeco music blared from several floats. A Chinese-style dragon graced the streets. As the parade went around downtown people cheered from warm windows of offices and apartments above. The crowd — almost certainly less due to the weather — was in great spirits and the goodies flowed freely.
