Republican leader Chad Nesbitt bows out of second county chairmanship race

Chad Nesbitt, current chair of the Buncombe County Republican Party, has notified executive committee members he does not plan to seek reelection this spring.

“I’ve got a lot of business plans,” he told the Xpress by phone on Monday, Jan. 4, but he said he is also contemplating running for another office, which he would not identify. “I do have plans to run, but it’s not something I want to announce right now,” Nesbitt said.

Founder of the conservative activist group Carolina Stompers (see Xpress report), Nesbitt has had a fairly high-profile run as party chair, including an early-voting episode of driving a street-sweeper up and down College Street, featuring a sign urging voters to “sweep out the Democrats.” He also used YouTube videos as part of a “guerilla marketing campaign” to entice Republicans to the polls.

Nesbitt, elected to the top seat in the local Republican Party last year, told the Xpress that with the next convention coming in March, he was already aware of two or three “very qualified” people who want to run for the seat he now holds, so he decided to inform the executive committee now that he did not plan to seek a second term.

Don’t go, Chad! You were doing such a good job at making the Republicans seem fringe and bizarre!

Also, sorry Chad, but YouTube videos do not a “guerilla marketing campaign” make.

Didn’t he promise to raise 3/4 of a million dollars with a telethon?

I still REALLY want to watch that.

Chad, PLEASE don’t go! Politics is sooo less interesting without your lovable, heartfelt whackiness.
