Shuler on Giffords shooting: “Acts of violence like this have no place in American politics”

In a statement to Xpress, Rep. Heath Shuler condemned the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona earlier today.

Giffords, a Democrat, was shot in the head at a “Congress on Your Corner” event in Tucson, Ariz., earlier today. At least 10 people were hit when the gunman opened fire, before a staffer restrained him. Police have identified the shooter as Jared Lee Loughner, 22, of Tucson, and have him in custody. Police are also seeking a second suspect.

“We were all shocked and saddened by the horrific and senseless tragedy in Arizona today,” Shuler’s statement reads. “Acts of violence like this have no place in American politics or our society. My thoughts and prayers are with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, the other victims, and all their families. Gabrielle is a friend and strong voice for her constituents. I pray for her well-being.”

Giffords is in critical condition, though doctors are “optimistic” about chances for her recovery. Five people were killed in the shooting, including a 9-year-old child and U.S. District Judge John Roll. North Carolina’s congressional leaders have expressed grief and shock at the shooting, including Sen. Richard Burr and Sen. Kay Hagan, who called the events “an absolute tragedy.”
